|
The researchers set out to identify the factors influencing a child’s maladaptive behaviors, track the child’s change process as a result of family therapy, and suggest therapeutic approaches for families with children experiencing problems in adolescence. Methods: The data for this study consisted of recorded transcripts and notes taken during 14 sessions of family therapy. The researchers used constant comparative analysis and Miles and Huberman’s matrix and network display to identify relevant factors. Results: Factors influencing the child’s maladaptive behaviors included attempted and failed solutions among family members and the parents’ lack of differentiation from their families of origin. Family members changed as a result of the parents’ attempts at new communication methods and a reduction in the child’s maladaptive behaviors. Conclusions: The researchers concluded that change in parents’ cognitions and behaviors can facilitate the reduction and resolution of a child’s problematic behaviors.
