The researchers set out to identify the factors influencing a child¡¯s maladaptive behaviors, track the child¡¯s change process as a result of family therapy, and suggest therapeutic approaches for families with children experiencing problems in adolescence. Methods: The data for this study consisted of recorded transcripts and notes taken during 14 sessions of family therapy. The researchers used constant comparative analysis and Miles and Huberman¡¯s matrix and network display to identify relevant factors. Results: Factors influencing the child¡¯s maladaptive behaviors included attempted and failed solutions among family members and the parents¡¯ lack of differentiation from their families of origin. Family members changed as a result of the parents¡¯ attempts at new communication methods and a reduction in the child¡¯s maladaptive behaviors. Conclusions: The researchers concluded that change in parents¡¯ cognitions and behaviors can facilitate the reduction and resolution of a child¡¯s problematic behaviors.
